Blunt Rochester Urges House Vote to Release Trump Tax Returns

Today, Rep. Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) released the following statement after signing a “Demand A Vote” petition to force the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to vote on the release of President Trump’s long-promised tax returns

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) released the following statement after signing a “Demand A Vote” petition to force the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to vote on the release of President Trump’s long-promised tax returns.

“One of the main roles of Congress is to provide oversight for the Executive Branch. Our responsibility to our constituents and the American public is to ensure the Executive Branch is functioning effectively and fairly, yet Republicans in Congress have voted against releasing President Trump’s tax returns,” said Rep. Blunt Rochester. “The American people deserve the truth about the connection between President Trump, Russia, and Putin. As Members of Congress, we all work for the American people and I urge my Republican colleagues to demand honesty and transparency in our government by supporting our efforts to ensure the President releases his taxes.”

The President’s tax returns will provide a clearer picture of his financial interests, including ties to Russia and China, and possible conflicts of interest, including from his annual income.

After Watergate, all presidents, Republicans and Democrats, have released either their individual tax returns or summary tax data.  Nearly three-quarters of Americans, including 50 percent of Trump’s supporters, want the President to release his tax returns, according to a recent ABC/Washington Post poll.

A “Demand A Vote” petition or discharge petition requires 218 signatures of Members of the House of Representatives in order to force a vote on the U.S. House floor.
