MILTON, Del. — Today, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) joined Milton Mayor John Collier and Milton Town Manager Kristy Rogers for a tour of Milton’s current Public Works Facility and to discuss Milton’s Community Project Funding request for FY 2024. The federal funding would be used to help fund the construction of a new public works facility. Blunt Rochester also visited the proposed new site for the facility. The current public works building sits on a flood plain and is impeding Milton’s ability to expand and provide quality services for its growing population. “Community Project Funding applications submitted to my office must meet two criteria: they have to have strong community need and strong community support, and the Town of Milton’s request has both,” said Rep. Blunt Rochester. “A new public works building would help meet evolving community needs by adding an administrative office, maintenance shop, storage building, and a public meeting space all while investing in our communities, economic development, and quality of life.” “The Town of Milton being considered for Congresswoman Blunt Rochester’s Community Project Funding is huge for the Milton community,” said Kristy Rogers, Milton Town Manager. “The Town’s funding request is to construct a Public Works Facility that will also serve as a meeting place for all Town Council, Commission, and Committee meetings. We are at the mercy of the Sussex County Library, and community churches and centers to hold Town meetings. The Town government needs a space that encourages civic participation where all can attend in-person or have the means to virtually connect to participate in meetings. In addition, the new Public Works Facility is designed for the future needs of staff, equipment, and materials as the Town is projected to at least double in population over the next 15 years. Lastly, the Town’s new facility will be located outside of the floodplain which greatly impacts the current facility property and response of the staff with equipment. Once a new facility is constructed, the current location of 210 Front Street will go through planning to enhance the town’s sustainability, ecotourism, and recreation.” Town of Milton Public Works Facility Milton is experiencing rapid growth in terms of housing and population and has outgrown its current public works facility. Because the existing public works facility is in a flood plain, the building cannot be expanded. The proposed new facility will include an administrative office and public meeting space, a maintenance shop, and a storage building. Additionally, the new facility will help Milton provide more government service related to public works and transparent public meetings as it does not currently have a dedicated public meeting space. Blunt Rochester is advocating for all the Community Project Funding requests her office submitted to the House Appropriations Committee for FY24 which includes the Town of Milton. Community Project Funding allows for nonprofit and governmental entities to apply for federal funding for community-based projects. ### |
