Reps. Blunt Rochester & Letlow Introduce Bipartisan Resolution Recognizing World Menopause Awareness Month

Washington, October 24, 2023 | Andrew Donnelly (302-893-4406)

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), and Congresswoman Julia Letlow (R-La.) introduced a bipartisan resolution recognizing World Menopause Awareness Month. The goal of the resolution is to raise awareness and access to care during menopause and post-menopause.

“Millions of women throughout the United States and throughout the world going through menopause experience this natural, yet often challenging, phase of life without the information or support they need,” said Rep. Blunt Rochester. “That’s why I’m proud to join Rep. Letlow in introducing this bipartisan resolution recognizing World Menopause Day. We know that women can experience the symptoms of menopause for as long as a decade - and that those symptoms can drive women out of the workforce and severely impact their quality of life. We must continue to raise awareness, and ensure that women have the resources they need so that no one suffers in silence.”

“Awareness is an essential agent for the future of women’s healthcare decisions. Oftentimes very little guidance is available to women who experience menopause symptoms,” said Rep. Letlow. “I’m proud to introduce this bipartisan legislation with Rep. Blunt Rochester to improve awareness, so when women experience menopause they have a much better understanding of what healthcare options and treatments are available to them.”

The resolution will resolve to:

  • Recognize October 2023 as “World Menopause Awareness Month” and October 18th as World Menopause Day;
  • Recognize the impact of menopause on women at individual and societal levels, as well as on the country’s health and economic development;
  • Promote including training on menopause and treatment options in pre-service curricula for health workers;
  • Support women having access to appropriate health information and services to promote health aging and high quality of life before, during, and after menopause;
  • Encourage the Secretary of HHS, the Secretary of Defense, and Secretary of Veterans Affairs to take several actions like providing information to women, patients, and health care providers with respect to menopause, including available screening tools and treatment options; conduct additional research on menopause and possible clinical options; update information, tools, and studies available, and share a copy of the resolution with the Secretary of HHS.
