An Update on the Coronavirus

Dear Friend,

I have heard from many of you about the concerns you have regarding the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). As news reports indicate, there has been a rapid increase in the virus around the globe and it is likely that more cases will begin to appear in the United States. I have been involved in the preparedness of our health care system at various levels over the years — as former Deputy Secretary of the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) and a current member of the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health — and I can say we are fortunate to have a robust public health system and an engaged population that have access to common sense preventative measures.

From the information we have to date, most coronavirus cases are mild with symptoms similar to the common cold, such as a cough, fever, or shortness of breath. Currently, the risk to the general public is low. Upon recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services, Delawareans should take the commonsense measures listed below to protect themselves and their families:

  • Make sure your vaccinations are up to date and be sure to get a flu shot if you have not.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • According to the CDC, you should cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Also, stay home if you are sick.
  • Disinfect frequently used objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • If you are well, the CDC does not recommend that you wear a facemask. Facemasks should be used by individuals who show signs of the virus to help prevent the spread.
  • If you are planning to travel, please visit the CDC's information for travel guide here
  • Rely on trusted sources like the Delaware Division of Public Health, DHSS, and the CDC.
  • Individuals who believe they have been exposed to the coronavirus should contact their health care provider.

In Delaware, our state officials and health care system have well developed practices and an infrastructure in place to manage the coronavirus. At the national level, our public health system will need additional resources to contain this virus and protect Americans in the best way possible. Right now, Congress is working on providing these resources in a bipartisan manner and I will continue to advocate for the necessary funding and speedy development of a low-cost and accessible vaccine. In the meantime, I urge all Delawareans to do your part to prevent the spread of this virus by taking practical measures to stay healthy and protect the most vulnerable in our communities.
