WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) issued a video message about H.R. 6135, the Keep Families Together Act and upcoming House immigration votes. Transcript below:
"I’m Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, and like many of you, I, too, am shocked by the situation that is developing at our border. Thousands of families seeking asylum are being torn apart and separated as a method to deter others. As a mother, I cannot imagine anything more devastating than having your child taken from you without any information about their whereabouts, their living conditions, or when you may be united again.
Let me be clear, the policy of separating innocent children from their families is cruel, inhumane, and inconsistent with our values. Let us also be clear that seeking asylum is not illegal, and President Trump and his administration have the power to end this crisis unilaterally without a single vote from Congress.
I believe that this moment requires more than just words; it requires action. That’s why I am taking a stand for those who cannot stand up for themselves. Today, I joined my House Democratic colleagues in releasing the Keeping Families Together Act. This bill will prohibit the Department of Homeland Security from continuing this disturbing practice, end the prosecution of asylum seekers, and create an action plan to reunite the more than 2,000 separated families.
Later this week, House Republicans are expected to bring two immigration bills to the floor. Neither of these bills balances border security with our humanitarian responsibilities, and I will oppose both of them. I am disappointed that the Speaker and Republican leadership have pursued a closed process, and I encourage them to allow a vote on the bipartisan immigration bills that Democrats and Republicans have worked on together.
I will continue fighting for our values, and I encourage you to stay engaged, stay informed, and stay vocal in your opposition to this cruel policy."
