WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (DE-AL) voted in favor of H.Con.Res. 83 – Directing the President pursuant to the War Powers Resolution to terminate the use of United States Armed Forces to engage in hostilities in or against Iran, issuing the following statement.
“Last week, President Trump’s impulsive and disproportionate strike against Iran put our service members and allies directly in harm’s way. The atrocities committed by Qasem Soleimani are not in dispute. He was indeed a lead architect of Iran’s destabilizing efforts across the Middle East and responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American and coalition service members. However, the action taken by President Trump represents a rapid escalation and strategic setback in diplomatic relations with Iran. A top goal of any foreign policy decision should be to keep the American people safe. This action has weakened our fight against ISIS, strained our relationship with the Iraqi government, and forced the deployment of thousands of additional troops into an increasingly unstable region. This airstrike was the latest example of an unclear and disjointed foreign policy strategy. Put simply - this decision has failed to make America safer. Today, I voted to make clear that the President must abide by the separation of powers and to reinforce Congress’ constitutional authority."
