WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) issued the following statement after voting on legislation to end a potential rail shutdown while giving workers a 24% pay increase and 7 days of paid sick leave.
“Today, Congress took decisive action to avoid a potentially catastrophic shutdown of our nation’s rail system,” said Blunt Rochester. “While, as Delaware’s former Secretary of Labor, I’m reluctant for Congress to exercise our authority to end a labor dispute, in this circumstance, I believe we were left with no other choice. Our vote today not only ensures that the nation’s freight rail system continues to operate unharmed - but that the workers who are the backbone of that system see a substantial pay raise and dramatically increased sick leave. Today’s vote put our nation’s workers and economy first.”
