Rep. Blunt Rochester Statement on Bipartisan Budget Agreement

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), issued the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the Bipartisan Budget Agreement, avoiding a catastrophic default on our debt.

“Let me be clear - we should never have been in this position in the first place. Republicans decided to play political games with the U.S. economy and risked the full faith and credit of our country. They did it in an attempt to make it easier for the rich to cheat on their taxes and harder for the poor to feed their families.

“Thankfully, President Biden and his skilled negotiating team ensured that the worst and most extreme impulses of the Republican Party were not realized. This deal protects Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and Veterans benefits and ensures we’re not rolling back the progress we’ve made over the past few years.

“This is not a bill I was happy to vote for - but it’s unquestionably better than the alternative - a disastrous and unprecedented default. Now, we must work to guarantee that no one can ever again hold our economy hostage for political gain.”
