WILMINGTON, Del. – Today, Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.) issued the following statement on the passing of former Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas.
“My heart is heavy at the news of the passing of my former colleague and mentor, Representative Eddie Bernice Johnson.
“Representative Johnson was truly devoted to her community in Dallas - advocating tirelessly for the needs and aspirations of her constituents. Her record of accomplishment speaks volumes about her dedication to progress and justice, leaving a lasting impact that will be felt for generations to come.
“As the first African American and woman to chair the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, she broke barriers and paved the way for countless others to follow. Her visionary leadership not only advanced our nation's progress but has also inspired a new generation of leaders to pursue careers in STEM.
“On a personal note, Eddie Bernice Johnson was more than just a colleague; she was a guiding light. Her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering support have been instrumental in my own journey as a public servant. Her life was a demonstration of the importance of leadership with a purpose, the power of perseverance, and the impact of lifting others as we climb.
“As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate her remarkable life and legacy. Her spirit, teachings, and achievements will continue to inspire me and many others in Congress and beyond. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, and all who loved her during this difficult time.”
